What is Kivulini?


Kivulini Women’s Rights Organization is a registered non-governmental organization based in Mwanza, Tanzania. Kivulini advocates for women’s and girl ’s rights in Tanzania by emphasizing the prevention of domestic against women and girls.

Kivulini uniqueness in prevention of Domestic Violence Against Women

The Kiswahili word Kivulini means “in the shade”. It implies a place of safety, under a tree or otherwise, where people meet for discussions and offer support to one another.

Kivulini was established in 1999 to create opportunities for community members to come together, talk, organize and work towards preventing domestic violence so that women and girls are able to enjoy their rights as stipulated in the Constitution of The United Republic of Tanzania, African Charter and various human rights conventions.

Governance and Accountability Structures


The Board of Directors, Executive Director and senior programme team provide strategic direction for the organisation (see organizational chart as indicated herein). The programme teams focuses on delivering the strategy, while learning from and building on each other’s work. The whole organisation remain focussed on domestic violence prevention and the organisation retain its integrity as a community based women’s rights organisation.

The organisation has a Board of Directors who govern the business of the organization and that enables the organization to access key government departments while also reflecting its community identity and focus. Kivulini has selected board members who have good links with the government of Tanzania and will help Kivulini to engage in its advocacy work.

Kivulini currently has 16 staff members who are committed to creating positive change in the lives of women and girls in our communities. The diverse backgrounds and experiences of staff build a strong team. Our staff has been responsible for project planning, management and facilitating community mobilization through awareness campaigns, capacity building and trainings for the staff of CSOs and for local government leaders. Additionally, they have engaged in consultancy work with national and international agencies and CSOs. Our expertise ranges from: Project Design & Management; Gender Mainstreaming; Community Governance; Community Approach to Economic Growth and Poverty Reduction; Policy Advocacy; Participatory Research; Peace building; Fundraising; Monitoring & Evaluation; Results-Based Orientation; Organizational Development, and Financial Management. The work experience of staff members ranges from 3 years to 15 years in the field of development work. This practical experience forms the basis of our broad compliment of competencies.

All staffs are based in Mwanza.

Organisation Culture


The Kivulini mission affirms the values of democratic governance, human rights, gender equity and meaningful public participation in decision-making. Consistent with our beliefs and ethics, Kivulini is also Committed to the core purpose of our work of preventing violence against women and girls, Equality and Justice for men and women,  Tolerance to differences and diversity, Respect and dignity of the rights of women and girls and Accountability and transparency to our actions and to our partners and stakeholders. We strive to to practice these values in our programs, in relations with partners and affiliates and in internal processes. Where possible Kivulini attempts to reach decisions through a process of consensus that encourages voicing of dissent viewpoints.
