Kivulini History

Kivulini is a registered non-governmental organization (NGO), founded in 1999 and based in Mwanza, Tanzania.  The word Kivulini, translated from Kiswahili, means “in the shade”. It implies a place of safety, under a tree or otherwise shaded area, where people meet for discussion and to offer each other support.  Kivulini is creating opportunities for community members to come together to talk, organize and work to prevent gender violence in order for women to enjoy their rights as stipulated by international human rights conventions. The organization’s vision of creating violence free communities is closely linked with women’s empowerment.

Kivulini was founded by Six women who felt compelled to take action to prevent the violence happening in our community . The founders believe that Violence destroys women's sense of self worth, tears families apart, and has dire consequences on the health and well - being of women. They strongly believe it is time for communities to unite, give voice to women's priorities and take responsibility for the violence committed against them!
