WELCOME TO KIVULINI

Kivulini’s vision is to see a community free from domestic violence where women’s rights are respected and valued.  Kivulini’s mission seeks to achieve this vision by facilitating an enabling social, economical, and legal environment which guarantees women and girls right to live in violence free communities through self empowerment, advocacy and building an active social movement for change.

We acknowledge that violence does not just happen, but is entrenched in societal norms and practices. As such, we endeavour to tackle these root causes of violence as a first step towards prevention. We also realise that we alone cannot reach as many people as we would like to, so we have dedicated time  to identifying and working with partners to achieve this mission!

Violence against women takes many forms. The 1993 Declaration of the United Nations General Assembly, on the Elimination of Violence against Women, defined violence as ‘Any act of gender-based violence that results in or is likely to result in physical, sexual, or psychological harm or suffering to women.’ According to a recent study by World Health Organization (WHO) on women’s health and domestic violence against women, Tanzania still has high rate of domestic violence. Working towards its vision of creating a violence free community, Kivulini also focuses on the economic empowerment of women as a means of curbing domestic violence and creating an environment in which they can earn an income and escape poverty. The majority of women remain in violent relationships because leaving them would mean losing their homes, other property and their children. Kivulini encourages women to take positions of local leadership, promoting their involvement in decision making processes and increasing access to education for women and girls.

This website will give you more information about our vision and mission, our objectives, Strategy and Programs and about our history.
